On Bashing Gandhi.

Often I have heard people bashing Gandhi. For them, I would want to tell only one thing : Try to fast for just two days and tell me how it feels like. While Gandhi as a politician is debatable, I am sure Gandhi as a human is a noble soul. The aphorisms of Patanjali (The Yoga Sutras) talk about Yamas or physical disciplines out of which Truthfulness and Bramacharya being very important virtues. Gandhi in that sense is a true yogi (and I guess that's one of the reasons for earning the title "Mahatma"). Also, it is not so easy to think of God when one is dying. Let's first try to be humans than being politicians.

Kasthuri,

I happen to be an admirer of the Mahathma. let all detractors of Gandhi try to lead a life like he did and try to comment on him after that. he is indeed a yogi.

the easiest thing to do is to find fault with others. some especially enjoy it if its a great person like Gandhi. totally agree with u

Gandhi as a person, has derived the physical strenght from his Will power.
Persistence towards the goal through the defined means, come what may!
That Will Power, i think is a product of truthfulness, for somebody who is always true is not afraid of anyone.

kasthuri,

as man becomes old, even the greatest atheist turns towards God for solace. personally, i don't regard gandhi as someone greater than the ordinary. true, he may be far better than present day politicians.

No human is beyond criticism. be it gandhi or nehru. just a thought shared.

came here on my friend vatsan's strong recomendation..

gandhi the politician was a limited, but well meaning one...

gandhi the humanitarian/philosopher was one of the greatest humans to have walked the earth..

as long as we keep the 2 separate i am fine with it..

the greatest thing abt him was his humility.he once said i believe,"i have nothing new to teach the world.truth and non violence are as old as the hills."

am looking forward 2 peeping into ur archives..vatsan has mentioned some of ur posts..

cheers,

What Gandhi did as a politician is what has resulted in Hindus being treated as second class citizens in their own country! No other country would do this to their own...

> Let's first try to be humans than being politicians.

He was in no way humanitarian to the Hindus in what is called Pakistan today. He told them to stay back and allowed them to be raped and looted! In the words of Godse, he must be called "Father of Pakistan" and definitely not India.

Srini: whats up? suddenly a post abt Gandhi?.

Kasthuri said...

@ anand : Yeh its very difficult to lead such life.

@ prabhu : I too think its not a big deal to criticize. To appreciate and understand things is something good.

@ tj : Will power - I need to think about it. I am not really clear about the concept of free will.

@ krishna : Thanks buddy.

@ fieryblaster : Thanks for dropping by. Its true that man generally gets scared about death when he gets old. But Gandhi resorted to such practices when he was quite young. In fact, Gandhi's policy towards truth goes back to his school days. I guess that's something appreciable.

@ siddharth : Hope u are not dissapointed. You are welcome to browse through thr archives and leave comments. Yes, Gandhi has two phases and politics is the profession he chose to dive in. Donno how successful he was.

@ satya : Yup.

@ ramya : I would not entirely blame Gandhi for that. And I am not sure whether Hindus are treated as second class citizens. The disparity comes when we look at people as Hindus, Muslims etc. I would want to look at people without attaching any religious tag to them.

@ tt_giant: Enna pa pannaradhu. Thought I should also deal with some matter as ioiio pointed out. Too much of mind stuff is boring. :-)

Kasthuri,

He has done loadsa good things, yes.

Does he deserve crticism/bashing ? Well, am not sure, that you can avoid being bashed up once you are in the public arena for whatever reason. Atleast a good thing was his personal life, was never an object of major speculation !

What do think about veer savarkar?

Kasthuri said...

Lakshmi,
Why suddenly Savarkar ? I don't have any opinions of him as such.

Lakshmi said...

A practising Hindu, a follower of Veer Savakar killed Gandhi....Veer savakar's followers also fantasised Hinduism.

Kasthuri said...

Lakshmi,
Its quite true that Hinduism has been fantasized and exploited by many people. It is a sad reality that this is going on. I would call them fanatics rather than followers of religion. I strongly believe if one follows a true religion then he would not be tempted to do such crazy things (like killing Gandhi). On the other hand, a true religion should teach us tolerence for all humans, nay, for every being in this earth.
