Sankhya and Sambhar.

Sankhya is a philosophical school of thought in India that was established by Sage Kapila around 10th century BC. This philosophy talks about the origin of the universe. Initially, there were two things : primordial matter (prakriti) and pure consciousness (purusha). When they came in contact with each other, this universe began its evolution. It is important to note that purusha doesn't act on prakriti. The mere presence of purusha made prakriti to evolve just like the mere looks of a lover makes the loved one happy. This concept is also akin to the process of making sambhar. When we bring the pan with vegetables, water, spices etc. close to the flame, we have sambhar. Here too, the flame (consciousness) doesn't act on the stuffs (matter) in the pan. The very presence of the flame 'cooks' the contents. Although, the process of making sambhar was started with a good intention of making it edible, the appreciation highly depends on the person who is tasting it !

I am forced 2 wonder wat wud have been the intentions of the God when he decided 2 start this ceaseless alchemy of evolution..( at least in accordance with samkhya skool of phil)..

dear KASTHURI,

what a comparison? were you hungry when you wrote this...?
just kidding, nice post.
according to Vaishnavism a la Ramanuja darsanam Narayana's samkalpa disturbs the eqilibrium of the gunas in prakriti. this results in the evolution of the universe which is real.
I have certain views regarding the whole efficient cause \material cause debate in philosophy which I will discuss with you at length later. I come to understand that there are several purushas( piritual monads) the superimposition of attributes and modifications found in prakriti are responsible for bondage. when purusha gets disengaged from prakriti he is liberated. This is actually a system which was originally atheistic and its postulates were modified by vedanthins to make a theistic picture employing a few samkhya categories. we need to note that the GiTA refers to its teaching as Samkhya more than once.
besides I understand that ISWARAKRISHNA is also a samkhya autjhor and the SAMKHYA KARIKA is the authoritatve text. this system also got integrated with Yoga philosophy.

the sambhar analogy seems to be interesting ( nope I'm not hungry! just had lunch)

Sarvam SrIKrishnaarpanamasthu!

Apporam saambar nanna vandhadhaa??
jokes apart, as put in my God-a perspective post, the universe is a combination of Energy/Matter and a logic that control it. Analogous to prakriti and purusha.

What is your stand on what is said in the Bible and the Quran? I read the translation of the Baghavat Gita once. It always talks about Brahmins and Brahmins only. Are the rest of the human beings not considered for spirituality as per Hinduism?

What is your stand on what RSS and its sister organizations are doing?

@ tt_giant : I have heard about "chicken soup".
What is this "primordial soup" ?
Don't worry I am no expert in sambhar as well.

@ krishna : Yes, we cannot question the intentions of creation. As soon as we do that we are forcing the eternal to limitations thus contradicting ourselves.

@ anand : Thanks for the info. I should read more on this.

@ tj : Sambhar as usual govindaa...its like the survival of the fittest :-(

@ ganesh : :-)

@ lakshmi : Here are my responses.

About Bible and Quran : I haven't made any attempt so far to understand them. So I better not say anything on them. But, inherently I somehow feel there should be truth in them also-otherwise they would not have withstood the test of time.

Baghavat Gita : I don't know which Gita you read. There are 'n' number of translations of Gita and it is very important to study Gita from a 'genuine' source. By 'genuine' source, I mean a point of view which does not contradict our existing beliefs and experience in life. Having said this, I would say while anyone can read Gita and interpret in their own terms, understanding Gita and getting the central message requires some preperations (like spiritual practices) and comprehensive view of life. Just like understanding topology requires prior ground work, understanding Gita requires groundwork too. In my humble opinion, it is better not to draw any conclusions by just going over the translations. I am sure Gita doesn't talk about brahmins only. Can you tell me which text you referred ? As far as Hinduism is concerened spirituality is a birth right of anyone who is born.

About RSS : To my knowledge there are very few organizations that are founded on the right principles of Hinduism (Vedanta Society is one such) and RSS is not one of those. Any institution that is started on the right spirit of Hinduism should teaach universal tolorence and not dichotomy.

I subscribe to the school of thought that Hinduism is a way of life and not a religion. Therefore the question that Lakshmi has asked becomes irrelevant.
